The Shar-Pei, a southern Chinese breed, is known in the West for deep wrinkles; Hong Kong Shar-Peis are less wrinkled. Ranked 64th by the American Kennel Club, their soft face, strong build, and wary behavior shape their reputation. Under threat or confusion, they may revert to ancient instincts, staying alert and distant, and will fight back until the danger passes.
