Dark streaks can follow trauma, like slamming a finger and bleeding under the nail. Without an injury, see a doctor promptly, as it can signal skin cancer. Called melanonychia, these lines are most concerning on a single nail. Some streaks are harmless and linked to medication, pregnancy, or ethnicity, but any new or changing line deserves a check. Subungual melanoma is the serious concern. Early detection is vital, so widening or darkening streaks should be evaluated quickly.
